Feet Hurt? Stop Wearing Shoes (on NPR)

obiterdicta:

A friend’s Swiss ex-husband found it annoying when she and I pranced barefeet around their pristine flat. He thought we were behaving in an uncivil manner. Oh well, pardon me for being from a civilisation that is only a few thousand years old!

Those, who never walk barefeet, also never experience the wetness of sand standing on the beach, the dryness of the sand off the beach; the coldness of the floor in the bathroom, the warmth of heated tiles in the living room; the rough touch of tarmac outside the house when you run after your pet, the soft touch of a silk carpet you step on first thing in the morning.

And some are lopping off toes to squeeze their feet into Choos and Manolos? Sorry, I forgot I am from a civilisation several thousand years old. May be lopping toes is what ‘civilised’ people do now.

I don’t like it when people walk in their dirty shoes in my house. And I don’t see any need for house slippers, if you have a carpeted flooring. I know that there are some people (like my mom) who have to wear house slippers because they can’t tolerate even a minuscule speck of dust. But if your house is extremely clean, then using shoes indoors would be ‘uncivilized’ in my opinion. By the way, who decides what is civilized or what in uncivilized? Not all of us come from the same civilization anyway!

I don’t have much cabinet space in my new kitchen. But I can’t complain because I have a free dishwasher installed. :-) As long as I don’t have to wash dishes by hand, I really don’t care. I’ve started putting away my pots and pans in the oven-something that I never used to do.

Unaccustomed Earth

Have been reading this book since the past two days and sadly, I’ve been let down. It’s not that great a book. Lahiri has beaten the topic of Bengali Indian American immigrants to death! There is no juice left. And on p. 179, I can’t believe that she’s actually gotten two of her characters confused. :-\ Have to wade through some 50 more pages. Will write a detailed review on my blog soon. I don’t think I want to read another book by her.

Bosses 'weigh up pregnancy risk'

obiterdicta:

And somebody needs to survey employers to arrive at this self-evident conclusion?

Here is a better idea - ask women in child-bearing years about the sort of side-stepping questions about if they are married, how long they have been married and if they own their house etc that are asked.

Women themselves are no help. A friend who had a child at 19 or 20, when she was married to a trader, now goes into job interviews and offers proactively the information that her son is now at University and therefore she is not as the risk of being pregnant on their time.

This sounds like that job interview that I had (and I told you about). The funny thing is that not many women even realize that they are being asked illegal questions or that they are willingly providing information that they absolutely don’t need to.

Didn’t we always know this? I’m interested in finding out the steps which businesses are taking to mitigate the problem. Such an article would be more interesting.

We shall not cease from exploration …And the end of all our exploring …Will be to arrive where we started …And know the place for the first time.

This is a crisis, and we can’t keep muddling around the edges, said Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, a nonpartisan advocacy group. We can pay for mental health care now or pay for the jail cells and cemeteries and alcohol and drug treatment programs later. Not to mention the moral obligation we have to these veterans. 5.2 earthquake rocks large area of Midwest; no major damage - Yahoo! News

This explains it! I went to sleep only at around 4 am and was violently woken up just minutes later. I moved away from my window and wanted to run down to the open yard, but was too shocked to do anything. I could hear things moving all around me. A very scary experience all in all. Even this morning, around 10 am, there was a slight tremor. I hope everybody is fine. The entire Midwest felt this tremor, it seems.

Bush Reported Taxable Income of $719,274 in 2007

From CNN:

President and Mrs. George W. Bush reported taxable income of $719, 274 for the tax year 2007 and paid $221,635 in federal income taxes, the White House said Friday. Vice President Cheney and his wife earned $2,528,068, the White House said, and owe taxes of $602,651.

Had enough? No? Take a look at Bush’s and Cheney’s Tax Returns (1040 PDF).

I know many women who find it safer to conceal their opinions, since women have also been conditioned to be seen and not heard and to be the pretty face next to the strong and powerful husband, which can clearly be seen in any story where a male politician or sports star is discovered in a sex scandal; of course, the woman is always standing by her man with her mouth shut, smiling politely like she is told to. A woman who chooses to speak her mind freely and openly is mostly ridiculed for her blunt honesty by the majority of people who care not to listen based purely on her possession of a vagina.

It seems as if once women set their footprints in the wet concrete of history and start making own choices without having to consult a man before doing so, the men start to get all uppity. You would think that with men feeling the way they apparently do, they would begin to see what women have gone through to get where they stand today and that they would understand and appreciate the activism and determination in which we have fought for our rights and have a better understanding of equal rights. However, men believe that they are deserving of all power in all aspects of life and in society based purely on their possession of a penis.

While you feel completely emasculated, confused and rejected from society, welcome to the lives of women.

The world is now dominated by women, where have I been? (via gauntlet) It really comes down to the type of men you choose to hang out with. While there will be narrow minded people everywhere, it is up to you to be with those who value you and those who don’t feel threatened by a woman who’s more educated and much more intelligent than them. Funnily, I always attract weaker men. They find my strength and courage comforting. On second thoughts, women are much stronger than men mentally!
Never judge someone by who he’s (she’s) in love with; judge him by his friends. People fall in love with the most appalling people. Take a cool, appraising glance at his pals.
Cynthia Heimel (via vasta) Oohh! Nice. Now only if we remember this quote the next time we decide to judge someone.
