The women getting children ready in tiny shorts and mini-ties on elastic bands were all sex workers. The children with their homework were the children of men who stayed five minutes for a “shot”. The cycle rickshaw men were pimps who’d found extra business when auto rickshaws drove down their income, the gas station men were also pimps, and so were the dhaba men. A 20 per cent or 30 per cent cut. The lorry drivers, the coolies were clients. Others in the street were “brokers”, some 300 of them. Men coming back with groceries were “temporary husbands”. The old lady at her gate was a brothel madam, haggling over the price of girls she was buying from desperately poor parents. Coloured Christmas stars over bungalows revealed a missionary drive to save the fallen. The policemen were slowing down, hoping to catch someone soliciting. They’d let her go again in exchange for free sex.

I totally believe this. Having lived in India for more than 20 years of my life, I know what it is like. Sex trade is big and is here to stay. Not only the lorry drivers and the coolies, but also men from “good” homes can be seen.

Oh- only one-size-fits-all iPod classic- 120 GB-$249.

How many different versions of iPod can Apple possibly keep, before cannibalization kicks in? And I think it already has…

Let's Rock-bottom Apple (AAPL)

Apple shares fall post-Let’s Rock announcements. Probably because investors already knew what’s coming! No surprises. No MacBook upgrades…same old iPod. With more memory, obviously.

Let's Rock!

Can’t wait to hear what Jobs has in store for us.

Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands and your plan is to blackmail this person?

Desi dinner

Ate some Indian food for dinner and I feel soo soo stuffed. The feeling’s one of discomfort. I wish I hadn’t eaten so much :( Add to this the misery of not going to the gym. And you have one unhappy toad sitting on a couch typing this post.
The difference between a smart person and a wise person is that a wise person knows how not to get into situations that a smart person knows how to get out of.

I need to shop less and stay at home longer. Spending way too much money at the malls. Another week starts tomorrow.

Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere. It’s not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It’s about baking a new pie.

But even girls and women who do not meet diagnostic criteria for either an eating disorder or BDD often have varying degrees of body insecurity and negative self image. Mass culture exerts so much pressure on women to look and behave in certain ways that body dissatisfaction becomes ingrained in our very psyches. It’s difficult if impossible to not absorb the relentless message that if only we use this makeup, reshape that body part, buy those clothes or lose weight that we too can achieve that unspoken promise of beauty and acceptance.

From here (via gauntlet)

Yeah…I know all about this. People like cracking jokes about women who don’t meet their definition of beauty. And people includes both men and women. Sometimes I feel ashamed of myself- for laughing at other women who are fat, too thin, too short, too tall, too…whatever.

Bonds Prices Dip Further...

…after news of th US Treasury Dept. bailing out the GSEs hit the market. Bond prices fall…yields rise! Thankfully, I didn’t lock in any money in CDs, else I would have lost this favorable interest rate. But what does this indicate about consumer sentiments? That they have no faith in US-govt-sponsored entities either. Bonds and stocks are interlinked and less faith in bonds might mean anything for the capital market- that investors will put money in stocks or move away. After taking into account the current market sentiments, I feel that the market’s gonna dip further this Monday. Good time to buy some more stocks…while September is still here.
